A refined example of Tudor’s mid-century Prince Oysterdate, this Reference 7970, dating to approximately 1966, embodies the understated elegance and practical design that defined Tudor watches of the period. Its warm gold-plated Oyster case is paired with a beautifully aged silver-toned dial, creating a classic combination characteristic of the era.

The dial features a finely brushed surface with applied baton hour markers and slender luminous hands, complemented by a sweeping central seconds hand. At 3 o’clock is the signature date aperture, made particularly distinctive by its red-and-black “roulette” date wheel, an attractive period detail that adds a subtle touch of color to the otherwise restrained dial. The Tudor rose appears prominently beneath 12 o’clock, accompanied by the Tudor Prince Oysterdate signature, while Rotor Self-Winding identifies its automatic movement.

The watch is housed in Tudor’s iconic Oyster case, developed under the close technical relationship between Tudor and Rolex. The stainless-steel screw-down caseback is engraved “Original Oyster Case by Rolex Geneva,” reflecting the Rolex connection that was central to Tudor’s identity during this period. The elegantly curved lugs and modest proportions give the watch a distinctly vintage presence on the wrist. It should be noted that the lugs sides of the case show signs of wear to the gold plating, which are visible in the images.

Adding further character is the period-style winding crown, which is signed “Oyster Patent” rather than bearing the Rolex coronet. Together with the Rolex-signed Oyster caseback and Tudor dial, this detail serves as a wonderful reminder of the shared Oyster heritage of Tudor and Rolex watches of the era.

The dial exhibits the natural signs of age one hopes to find in a vintage watch of this period, lending the piece warmth and individuality without detracting from its clean overall appearance. Paired with a dark blue leather strap, the gold-plated case and silver dial create an elegant contrast that feels equally at home dressed up or worn casually.
